On the hottest opening day in Wimbledon history—when air temperatures on the grounds reached 32.3°C by 16:00 BST on Monday, surpassing the previous record of 29.3°C set in 2001—defending champion Carlos Alcaraz defeated Fabio Fognini in a first-round five-set thriller on Centre Court. After four hours and 37 minutes, the final score was 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 2-6, 6-1.
That victory takes his career record in five-set matches to an astonishing 14 wins and just 1 loss.
Carlos’ next opponent is Britain’s Oliver Tarvet, just five months younger than him. While Tarvet has been studying in San Diego, our champ has been making history with five Grand Slam titles.
