Italian Fabio Fognini is Carlos Alcaraz’s first opponent at Wimbledon this year. In an interview with the Spanish newspaper AS, he was asked about playing Carlos and mentioned his 8-year-old son Federico, who is a huge fan of the Spanish tennis player. Here’s an excpert from that interview.
Two days ago, when the draw came out, my son called me and said: ‘Dad, did you see? You’re playing against Carlitos!’ And I said, ‘Yes, do you want to come?’ ‘Yes, yes, yes! I’m coming, I’m coming!’ And Flavia, along with our daughter, is also coming to watch the match. Now, when we saw Alcaraz, I told my son: ‘Don’t say hi to him, because he’s my opponent tomorrow.’ And he got upset!
If it hadn’t been for Carlos, wouldn’t they have come?
No, I don’t think so. Along with Jannik, who’s Italian, the player my son Federico likes the most is Carlitos. So I think this is something really special for them too. He’s eight years old, and he’s going to remember this—it’s the nicest thing I could ask for. As for Carlitos, I get along with him really well. We’ve played twice—both times in Rio—with two wins for the guy from Murcia in 2022 and 2023. And well… here we are.
We all know Fabio as the funny guy with a fiery temper on court, but this story about his son definitely melts our hearts.
